Call for Papers - PhD Workshop
The European Union, Turkey and its wider neighbourhood: challenges and opportunities
October 17-18, 2017
Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals (IBEI), Barcelona, Spain

Several interconnected crises are profoundly affecting relations between the European Union and Turkey. The refugee crisis, the failed coup attempt in Turkey of July 2016, the UK’s aspiration to exit the European Union, Turkey’s Constitutional referendum, the unravelling neighbourhood and rising Eurosceptic trends on both sides are just the most recent examples. Although Turkey has always been an integral part of Europe’s history, a contrasting mix of conflict and cooperation, has been at the heart of the dense relationship between Turkey and the European project from the outset.

The Centre of Turkey and European Union Studies (CETEUS) at the University of Cologne coordinates two research projects on EU-Turkey relations - FEUTURE (Horizon 2020) and TRIANGLE (Blickwechsel: Contemporary Turkey Studies, funded by Stiftung Mercator) – that provide the framework for the organization of a two-day PhD Workshop hosted by the Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) in Barcelona on 17 and 18 October 2017. The workshop will be under the scientific leadership of Ass. Prof. Dr. Robert Kissack, IBEI (Researcher in Residence) and the Scientific Committee including Prof. Dr. Atila Eralp (METU), Prof. Dr. Meltem Müftüler-Bac (Sabanci University), Dr. Eduard Soler (CIDOB, IBEI) and Dr. Funda Tekin (CETEUS).

The Workshop will also provide the opportunity to participate in the FEUTURE mid-term conference on 19 and 20 October 2017 in Barcelona and to extend your network of academics and stakeholder in EU-Turkey relations.

Papers are welcomed from PhD students of political science, international relations as well as economics, history, law and social sciences dealing with topics related to the EU, Turkey and the wider neighbourhood in the context of EU-Turkey relations, by 1 August 2017 (to eva.binkert@uni-koeln.de and bsakinir@uni-koeln.de).
