Each year, the European Union (EU) handles important topics to create awareness, encourage discussions, and develop a dialogue between countries since 1983. In this context, the European Commission proposes a theme like cultural heritage, citizenship, creativity & innovation etc. for the European Year, and the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union decide which themes will be used each year.
The year 2019, accepted as the European Year of Galileo by the EU. Through this year, European citizens would find an opportunity to inform about the "EU Global Satellite Navigation System" and its tangible effects on their daily lives. The Global Satellite Navigation System is playing a key role in a broad range of applications, including the Internet of things, traffic safety, civil protection and humanitarian operations for the EU citizens.
What is GNSS?
“Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) refers to a constellation of satellites providing signals from space that transmit positioning and timing data to GNSS receivers.”(1)
"Galileo is the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) that is being created by the European Union through the European GNSS Agency (GSA). One of the main aims of Galileo is to supply an independent high-precision positioning system so European nations do not have to rely on the Russian, Chinese or U.S. GPS systems, which could be disabled or degraded by their operators at any time.”(2)
