About UNESCO's World Heritage List

Heritage is a unique value that comes from the past, what we live today, and what we pass to the next generations. In this context, heritage is a gift from the past to the future. The cultural and natural heritage are both unique values for all of the people. Because of that, the protection of heritage is one of the most important matters for humanity.
According to the UNESCO’s World Heritage concept, "World Heritage sites belong to all the peoples of the world, irrespective of the territory on which they are located."(1) In this context, one of the major working areas for the UNESCO is the protection and promotion of cultural and natural heritage. In this sense, the Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage was adopted on 16 November 1972 at the 17th General Conference of the UNESCO in Paris. With this treaty, natural areas, monuments and historical places which have international importance can earn the status of World Heritage. The World Heritage List shows the wealth and diversity of the cultural and natural heritage of the world. Turkey has been signed this treaty in 1982 and has 18 cultural heritage registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
