Notre Dame Cathedral and Protection of Heritage
Notre Dame Cathedral is symbolizing a historically, architecturally, and spiritually heritage as a universal for all of the people. The Cathedral is considered as the finest example of French Gothic architecture. Also, it is known that the building construction began in 1160 and continued over a century.
The Cathedral is a part of the 'Paris, Banks of the Seine' on the World Heritage List of UNESCO since 1991.
The fire which was occurred recently in the Notre Dame was a big tragedy by all people around the world. Also, this case shows us that the protection of heritage is a very important issue. For example, we saw how Syria’s cultural heritage was destroyed during the Syrian civil war. According to the report published by the UN, 24 of the cultural heritage sites in Syria have been completely destroyed, 104 have been seriously damaged, and 85 have been described as having secondary damage.
The cultural heritage can be under threat due to a variety of risks such as natural disasters, terror attacks, wars or other activities. The protection of cultural heritage is a very important issue. Artefacts, structures and monuments, which are called tangible cultural heritage, can see great damages if they are not well-protected. Cultural heritage is not about only the history but also the belonging of societies. In this sense, it contains both collectively and individually meanings.
Consequently, the major issue is the protection of cultural heritage. For thus, digitalization of cultural heritage should be the first tool for protecting and transferring to the next generations. In recent years, digitalization of heritage has become an important topic for people who works in this area.
