International Women’s Day 2020
"I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights”
Women started to fight for basic human rights and political equality in the early twentieth century. This pursuit of women's rights has gained a global dimension over the years. The starting point of International Women's Day is considered as the gender equality movements that were happening in North America and Europe. As a result, the United Nations (UN) started celebrating March 8 as International Women's Day in 1975. (1) This day is of great importance for women all over the world. Because this day represents the achievements of women regardless of their cultural, economic or political differences, and it is a recognized day to celebrate their achievements.
Unfortunately, gender equality and women's rights are developing very slowly in many parts of the world. Even in developed countries, women have many economic, social and cultural barriers. This year’s International Women’s Day (8 March) takes place in the context of the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, considered the most comprehensive roadmap on women’s rights. The theme of the Women's Day in 2020 was determined as “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights”. This theme aims to bring people from every gender, age, ethnicity, race, religion and country together. As a result of these activities, it is aimed to mobilize the world to ensure that all people have gender equality.
