This is a two-year research project launched in September 2012 and supported by the European Commission within the context of the 7th Framework Programme.
The research, awarded a Marie Curie Career Integration Grant, will be conducted by Dr. Alper Kaliber under the mentorship of Prof. Ayhan Kaya at the European Institute of Istanbul Bilgi University. The project aims to investigate the impact of the European Union and the broader institutional, normative and policy framework of European integration on politically mobilised civil society in Turkey.
It examines how the EU-required legal and constitutional reforms regarding the freedoms of association and assembly have influenced the political and structural environment in which civil society organizations operate. The project also assesses how various EU funding schemes and increasing opportunities for collaboration with European counterparts contribute to civil society actors’ efforts to reorganise and further develop their strategies, objectives and action frameworks.
Additionally, the project explores how politically mobilised civil society organizations respond to, engage with, and utilise the EU/European context in order to enhance their influence and advance their political agendas.
