ValEUs - Foreign Policy Issues: Values and Democracy

Project Objective and Scope

In recent years, the European Union (EU) has faced unprecedented challenges in fulfilling its mission to build a peaceful and prosperous future based on shared values. Despite the inclusion of fundamental values in global governance mechanisms, societal actors are increasingly opposing both the EU's methods of promoting these values and the values themselves. Understanding these objections is crucial, not only for the EU's resilience but also for the future role it will play on the international stage.

The ValEUs project aims to explore the reasons behind these objections and provide a realistic framework for the EU's foreign policy. The project focuses on the following key objectives:

  1. Investigating the various objections to EU values.
  2. Gathering insights into successful counter-strategies and developing alternative policy agendas.
  3. Encouraging universities to take on new roles as responsible actors, democracy laboratories, and committed partners for regions in danger, such as Ukraine.

ValEUs brings together 21 partner institutions from 18 countries and five continents in a comprehensive international collaboration.
