‘The EU-Turkey Relations: The Lisbon Treaty and beyond’

İstanbul Bilgi University European Institute will be hosting the third session of the Summer University in collaboration with Centre International de Formation Européenne (CIFE). The Summer University entitled ‘The EU-Turkey Relations: The Lisbon Treaty and beyond’ will take place between July 18, 2010 and August 5, 2010.

İstanbul Bilgi University European Institute will be hosting the third session of the Summer University in collaboration with Centre International de Formation Européenne (CIFE). The lectures, roundtable discussions and debates will encompass the following topics: EU history, transformation processes in accession countries, EU economic, social and sustainability affairs, political system of the EU after the Lisbon Treaty, origins of EU-Turkey relations, EU-Turkey: political issues, state, society and culture in Turkey, westernisation in Turkish politics, Turkey and democracy, human rights in Turkey, civil-military relations in Turkey, diversity and citizenship in Turkey, Europe in the long-run, Istanbul as an urban landscape: Historical, Cultural and Political Aspects, Turkish Foreign Policy towards Middle East And Asia.

Participants will have the opportunity to receive 6 ECTS credits upon completion of the requirements.

The program participants will consist of 20 Turkish students and 20 international students. Participants who successfully complete the program will acquire a certificate of completion and those who wish to acquire 6 ECTS credits will be subject to an oral exam and will submit a short paper. The working language of the Summer University will be English. Participant will be accommodated at the İstanbul Bilgi University’s Tophane Dormitory and lectures will take place at the Dolapdere Campus.

The Summer University will consist of a series of lectures and roundtable discussions from expert academicians, journalists and prominent European politicians, both from abroad and Turkey. The lectures, roundtable discussions and debates will encompass several topics about the EU, Turkey and the relationship between EU and Turkey. The program will begin with an overview of EU history, its institutions and policies. The program will proceed with lectures and debates about the leading issues surrounding Turkey’s membership such as civil-military relations and euroscepticism as well as enlightening the participants about the westernization and democratization of Turkey.

Additionally, participants will take part in various debate sessions during which they will discuss the cultural aspects of Istanbul as a multicultural and cosmopolitan city. At the end of the Summer University, participants will partake in a simulation which will inform them about the procedures and the functioning of European Union institutions. Participants will also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of extracurricular activities ranging from guided visits to group explorations. These activities will include but are not limited to a tour of the Bosphorus, explorations of religious communities and urban districts in İstanbul.
Fundamentally, the Summer University is intended to provide the participants with the opportunity to interact with several different cultures while enhancing their ability to work in both small and large groups.

Application requirements for Turkish applicants are as follows:

• June 15, 2010 is the deadline for the applications. Applications received after this date will not be taken into consideration.
• The applicant should be a third or fourth year undergraduate or a first year graduate student with a background in social sciences such as international relations, political science, economics, management, EU studies and law.
• The applicants are required to be proficient in English.
• The applicant should submit a copy of application form written in English. Application form includes background and contact information and a statement of purpose reflecting their thoughts and views on how they can benefit from the Summer University.
