TURKEY AS EU’S PARTNER: LESSONS FROM THE MIGRATION CRISIS AND PREPARATION FOR THE NEXT ONE

As the migration wave from Afghanistan intensifies and may get even stronger in the upcoming months, EU has been evaluating its options to avoid a disastrous déjà vu of 2015, when basic principles of the European as well as international law were disrespected, and migrants had been constrained to execute their basic human rights, including the right to seek an asylum. However, EU Member States did not find a replacement of Dublin Regulation, and, instead, they have been pushing for an extended cooperation in migration handling with third countries.
Turkey has certainly helped the EU but the price, especially the political one, had been high for the block. An abuse of migrants to address own foreign policy issues has already become part of global power policy, and Ankara did not hesitate to engage in it.
– Has the Union learned from previous cooperation with Ankara?
– What is the situation of migrants in Turkey, how had 4 million of them manage to integrate, and how is the atmosphere changing with a growing number of Afghan refugees?
– How does a political power handle the new influx, and can the Turkish regime misuse the crisis for its own gain?
