Dear Friends of Bilgi’s European Institute,

We are very happy to share some good news with you. The European Institute, as part of two prestigious Consortiums, is now part of two new Horizon 2020 projects which will, each in their different field, have considerable impact on research in social sciences. Both projects will start in April 2016 and have a duration of 36 months.

In the first Project “Critical Heritages project (CoHERE)” researchers from 12 Universities led by Newcastle University will be looking at how heritage brings people from countries across the continent together as ‘Europeans’ – and how it can drive them apart. The €2.5 million Critical Heritages project is the largest and most comprehensive study to date to explore the differences in how people, groups, elite and institutions across Europe use the past to create a sense of belonging or non-belonging. Prof. Dr. Ayhan Kaya, a member of the Department of International Relations and the Jean Monnet Chair of European Politics of Interculturalism, will coordinate Bilgi’s participation to the CoHERE project.

Our second new Project “Future of EU-Turkey Relations (FEUTURE)” will focus on the narratives and drivers of the EU-Turkey relationship, the likely scenario(s) for the future and the implications these may have on the EU and Turkey, as well as the neighbourhood and the global scene. The FEUTURE Project which has an overall budget of €2.5 million will contribute to the knowledge on the external environment the EU operates in, providing a strong, evidence based foundation from which the future trajectory of EU-Turkey relations may be drawn. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Senem Aydin, a member of the Department of International Relations and the Jean Monnet Chair in EU Political and Administrative Studies, will coordinate Bilgi’s participation to the FEUTURE Project.

Best wishes
